Position Overview

This Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) at the Clinical Nurse II level plays a crucial role in delivering compassionate, patient-focused care within a dynamic medical-surgical oncology setting. The ideal candidate demonstrates advanced clinical skills, specialized certifications, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Perform thorough patient assessments to identify individual needs and develop tailored care plans.
• Administer medications and treatments, closely monitoring patient responses and intervening as necessary.
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide safe, efficient, and timely care.
• Advocate for patients by maintaining their dignity and confidentiality.
• Exhibit empathy and compassion to enhance the patient experience.
• Educate patients and families on medical conditions, medications, and lifestyle changes.
• Promote evidence-based practices in medical-surgical oncology care.

Safety and Compliance

• Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to infection control protocols and institutional policies.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as The Joint Commission and OSHA.
• Proactively identify and report safety concerns.

Documentation

• Accurately document patient care, interventions, and responses in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) following established standards.

Professional Development and Leadership

• Mentor and precept new graduate nurses, new hires, and students to support their growth.
• Engage in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives.
• Serve as a resource for best practices within the medical-surgical unit.
• Assume Relief Charge Nurse duties as needed.

Emergency Preparedness

• Respond promptly and effectively to patient emergencies, including Rapid Response Team situations.

Qualifications

Experience

• Minimum of two years as a Registered Nurse in a medical-surgical or equivalent setting.
• Proven ability to manage a diverse patient caseload with common medical and surgical conditions.
• Experience working in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment requiring quick decision-making and teamwork.
• Chemotherapy experience required for oncology department roles.

Competencies

• Technical Skills: Proficient with medical equipment such as IV pumps and monitors, and skilled in medication administration.
• Critical Thinking: Strong clinical judgment and problem-solving abilities to respond to acute patient condition changes.
• Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with patients, families, and healthcare team members.

Education

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with five years of relevant experience may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

• Current Registered Nurse license valid in the state.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate required for oncology roles.
• Orthopedic Nurses Certification (ONC) or Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification (CMSRN) preferred depending on unit assignment.
