The Certified Operating Room Technician (CORT) plays a vital role in preparing and maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room, ensuring all instruments and equipment are ready for surgical procedures. This position supports the surgical team by assisting during operations, contributing to positive patient outcomes and efficient surgical workflows.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and sustain the sterile operating room environment before, during, and after surgeries.
• Assist surgeons and medical staff by passing instruments and materials as needed.
• Maintain and update surgeon preference cards to align with individual needs.
• Under surgeon supervision, perform tasks such as holding retractors, sponging, suctioning, cutting sutures, and applying dressings.
• Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are sterilized and functioning properly prior to use.
• Verify patient identity, surgical procedure, and surgical site before operations.
• Keep accurate records of surgical procedures and equipment usage.
• Adhere strictly to safety and health protocols to minimize infection risks.
• Verify sterile indicators and expiration dates on fluids and medications.
• Follow AORN guidelines for sterile technique and surgical counts.
• Assist in post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and central supply as needed.
• Differentiate sterilization methods for specialized equipment and instruments.
• Restock operating room supplies after procedures.
• Assist surgeons with gowning, gloving, and draping.
• Perform surgical hand scrubs and maintain highest sterile standards.
• Work efficiently in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while prioritizing tasks and solutions.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• Current certification as an Operating Room Technician from an accredited program, or completion of an LPN course or equivalent education/experience.
• Proven experience in a hospital or surgical center, preferably in an operating room setting.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, operating room protocols, sterilization techniques, and infection control.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with surgical teams.
• Ability to perform well under pressure in a fast-moving environment.
• Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and assist with patient lifting when necessary.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification according to American Heart Association standards.
