General Summary

The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a licensed Registered Nurse responsible for overseeing unit operations during assigned shifts. This position emphasizes patient safety, quality care, and staff development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established policies related to patient safety, including infection prevention, safe patient handling, and critical lab notifications.
• Monitor and coach staff compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Maintain central lines and prevent surgical site infections according to protocols.
• Deliver quality nursing care, including medication administration, interventions, and patient/family education.
• Support quality initiatives by participating in monitoring activities and process improvements.
• Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments to ensure accurate status monitoring and enhance safety.
• Review and co-sign assessments performed by Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), providing feedback to improve performance.
• Utilize critical thinking to identify areas needing intervention and guide patient care staff accordingly.
• Document patient care activities and quality monitoring accurately to support compliance.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, and families to promote positive outcomes and patient satisfaction.
• Handle service recovery and follow-up on patient care concerns professionally.
• Delegate tasks appropriately while fostering teamwork and accountability.

Education

Graduation from an accredited nursing school is required. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

At least one year of registered nursing experience is preferred.

Certification and Licensure

• Current RN license valid in the state or through Compact Licensure.
• Graduate Nurses must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.

Mental and Physical Requirements
