General Summary

The Surgical First Assistant is a skilled professional who employs sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgeries. Responsibilities include preparing cases according to surgeon preferences, ensuring proper use of instruments and prosthetics, and maintaining aseptic conditions throughout procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Set up surgical cases accurately using preference cards and appropriate instruments.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology effectively.
• Demonstrate dexterity and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
• Monitor implantable devices using sterile techniques and verify their function.
• Inspect equipment for proper operation before procedures.
• Handle surgical tools, tables, cautery units, and specialty equipment with care.
• Assist physicians in positioning patients safely and appropriately.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative site under physician guidance.
• Support hemostasis and assist with closure of body planes using proper techniques.
• Apply wound dressings as ordered by the surgeon.
• Maintain accountability, work independently, and manage time efficiently.
• Keep workspaces organized and clean to enhance patient safety.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality standards under surgeon supervision.

Education

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certifications and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This position demands considerable mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions
