General Summary

The Surgical First Assistant is a skilled professional who applies sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgical operations. This role requires precision, anticipation of surgical team needs, and adherence to safety protocols to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical cases accurately using physician preference cards and appropriate instruments.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology effectively during procedures.
• Maintain aseptic technique, demonstrate dexterity, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established policies and procedures.
• Monitor and manage implantable devices using sterile techniques.
• Inspect and ensure proper functioning of surgical equipment prior to use.
• Assist in patient positioning safely under physician guidance.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative site as directed by the surgeon.
• Support the surgeon in maintaining hemostasis and closing body planes using appropriate techniques.
• Apply wound dressings as ordered by the physician.
• Demonstrate accountability, work independently, adapt to change, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
• Organize information efficiently, maintain a clean workspace, and manage time effectively.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.

Education

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certifications and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This position demands considerable mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions
