General Summary

The Medical Assistant operates within their scope to deliver patient care as delegated by nursing staff or providers. The ideal candidate is organized, professional, detail-oriented, and able to multitask effectively while maintaining excellent customer service and critical thinking skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control and safe patient handling.
• Assist patients by escorting them to exam rooms, obtaining vital signs, EKGs, and verifying medications, allergies, and medical history according to provider preferences.
• Document patient information accurately and promptly in electronic health records.
• Manage phone communications, route messages, and act as a liaison between patients and providers.
• Communicate test results to patients and assist with follow-up calls as needed.
• Support medication renewals, authorizations, and administer medications as ordered (oral, IM, SQ).
• Perform point-of-care lab testing and collect specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Schedule appointments, diagnostic procedures, and surgeries as directed by providers.
• Complete necessary paperwork including prior authorizations and referrals in a timely manner.
• Maintain exam room supplies, clean and restock as needed.
• Educate patients on electronic health record portals and assist with enrollment.
• Assist in training and orienting new medical assistants.
• Demonstrate accountability, teamwork, adaptability, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.

Education

• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant or Medical Specialist program or equivalent experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

• Preferred: One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or related medical specialist.
• Preferred: Experience in a medical clinic environment.

Certification and Licenses

• Preferred: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential from an accredited organization such as AMT.
• Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

Mental and Physical Requirements

• Requires significant mental focus and concentration.
• Physical demands include lifting up to 35 lbs, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional encounters with hostile individuals.
• Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and bodily fluids.
