As a Surgical First Assistant, you will collaborate closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and surgical staff to ensure optimal outcomes before, during, and after surgical procedures.

General Summary

This role involves utilizing sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgeries, ensuring patient safety and surgical efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical cases accurately using physician preference cards and appropriate instruments.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology effectively during procedures.
• Maintain aseptic techniques, demonstrate manual dexterity, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
• Monitor and manage implantable devices with sterile technique and ensure proper function.
• Inspect and prepare surgical equipment prior to procedures.
• Assist in patient positioning under physician guidance to ensure safety and optimal access.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative site as directed by the surgeon.
• Support the surgeon in maintaining hemostasis and closing body planes using appropriate techniques.
• Apply wound dressings as ordered by the physician.
• Demonstrate accountability, work independently, adapt to change, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
• Organize information and maintain a clean, efficient workspace.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.

Education

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certification and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This position demands significant mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Exposure to infectious and communicable diseases is common, with occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Physical discomfort is minimal but present.
