General Summary

Under the supervision of a licensed nurse (RN, LPN, or shift manager), the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) delivers essential bedside care to patients, ensuring their comfort and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established safety protocols including infection control, safe patient handling, and timely communication of patient condition changes to nursing staff.
• Perform basic patient care tasks such as monitoring vital signs, conducting glucometer checks, assisting with toileting, feeding, bathing, and mobility activities.
• Operate within hospital policies to promote quality outcomes and patient safety.
• Collaborate closely with nursing staff to meet patient needs promptly and enhance the overall patient experience.
• Accurately document all patient care activities to support clinical decision-making by the healthcare team.
• Effectively communicate relevant patient information to appropriate team members to improve care quality.

Education

High school diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

At least one year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is preferred.

Certification and Training

For those uncertified or with less than one year of experience, completion of a PCA training academy is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained within the first 90 days of employment; training is provided.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role requires significant mental focus and physical activity including lifting up to 35 pounds, standing, walking, and various movements such as turning, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases through blood and bodily fluids is expected. Occasional encounters with hostile individuals may occur.
