General Summary

The Nursing Supervisor holds delegated authority and responsibility for administrative supervision of hospital activities on the assigned shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Evaluate staffing needs across patient care areas and reassign personnel as necessary.
• Coordinate with emergency, registration, and nursing units to facilitate timely patient admissions.
• Manage emergency surgeries and demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of cardiac arrest, fire, and disaster procedures, taking a lead role when activated.
• Provide guidance and support to nursing staff regarding new or unusual treatments.
• Remain accessible to nursing staff for questions and problem-solving, adapting to unexpected situations effectively.
• Utilize cost-effective staffing strategies aligned with patient census and budgeted patterns.
• Interpret hospital policies and regulations for staff, patients, and visitors.
• Monitor nursing units throughout shifts, adjusting staffing as needed.
• Conduct frequent rounds to observe patient care and staff performance.
• Report employee behaviors to the Director for performance evaluations.
• Address emerging issues within nursing and other departments, providing temporary solutions and communicating with supervisors or Directors.
• Maintain accurate records of call-ins.
• Obtain necessary medications, supplies, and medical records from other departments to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Assign admitted patients to appropriate beds, considering acuity and service needs.

Education

Graduate of an accredited nursing school is required. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is preferred.

Experience

Three to five years of clinical registered nursing experience is required. Previous supervisory experience is preferred.

Certification/License

Current RN license in a Compact State or the state of employment is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is mandatory; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is preferred.

Mental/Physical Requirements

This role demands considerable mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 lbs., frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and potentially hostile individuals may occur. Exposure to communicable diseases through blood and other body fluids is common. Physical discomfort is minimal.
