General Summary

The Surgical First Assistant is a skilled professional who applies sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgeries, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical cases accurately using surgeon preference cards and appropriate instruments or prosthetics.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology effectively during procedures.
• Maintain aseptic techniques, demonstrate manual dexterity, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
• Monitor implantable devices using sterile methods and verify their proper function.
• Inspect and ensure all surgical equipment is functioning correctly prior to use.
• Handle surgical tools, tables, cautery units, and specialty devices with care.
• Assist in positioning patients safely under physician guidance.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative site as directed by the surgeon.
• Support the surgeon in achieving and maintaining hemostasis using appropriate techniques.
• Assist with closure of body planes and apply wound dressings as ordered.
• Demonstrate accountability, work independently, adapt to change, and maintain punctuality and attendance standards.
• Organize information efficiently, maintain a clean workspace, and manage time effectively.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and enhance patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.

Education

Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certification and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role demands significant mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions
