General Summary

The Surgical First Assistant is a skilled professional who employs sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgical operations. This role requires precision, dexterity, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical cases accurately using physician preference cards and appropriate instruments or prosthetic devices.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology effectively during procedures.
• Maintain aseptic techniques and demonstrate excellent manual dexterity.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
• Monitor and manage implantable devices with sterile technique and ensure proper function.
• Inspect and verify the functionality of surgical equipment prior to use.
• Assist in patient positioning safely under physician guidance.
• Provide clear visualization of the operative site as directed by the surgeon.
• Support the surgeon in maintaining hemostasis and closing body planes using appropriate techniques.
• Apply wound dressings as ordered by the physician.
• Exhibit accountability, adaptability, and focus under pressure while maintaining punctuality and attendance standards.
• Organize and maintain a clean, efficient workspace and manage time effectively.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.

Education

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certification and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements
