General Summary

The Clinic Laboratory Assistant is responsible for prioritizing and processing incoming specimens according to safety guidelines, ensuring accuracy in physician orders, and maintaining specimen integrity. You will generate and attach labels, distribute specimens promptly, and resolve any processing conflicts by coordinating with providers for re-collections when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage workload to meet or exceed established turnaround times for testing requests.
• Perform quality control procedures and report any discrepancies to supervisors.
• Collect specimens using venipuncture, capillary puncture, or arterial methods, ensuring minimal patient discomfort and adherence to protocols.
• Handle chain of custody drug screens and glucose tolerance testing with proper patient instructions and dosage.
• Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reorder as needed, and keep work areas clean and organized.
• Clean equipment and outpatient contact areas regularly, documenting maintenance activities.
• Follow strict safety and hand hygiene protocols to minimize contamination risks.

Education

High school diploma or GED is required.

Experience

At least one year of experience as a phlebotomist or laboratory assistant is preferred.

Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for approximately 50% of the time during shifts.
• Capability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
• Close mental and visual attention for short periods is necessary.
• Comfort working in an air-conditioned environment with moderate noise levels.
• Flexibility to work various shifts as needed.
