As an RN Shift Manager, you will oversee unit operations, ensuring patient safety and quality care throughout your shift.

General Summary

The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a professional Registered Nurse who assumes management responsibility for the unit during a shift, guiding staff and maintaining high standards of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Adhere to established policies regarding patient safety, including infection prevention, safe patient handling, and critical lab notifications to maintain an optimally safe environment.
• Monitor and coach staff compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Maintain central lines and prevent surgical site infections according to policy.
• Deliver quality nursing care, including medication administration, nursing interventions, and patient and family education.
• Support quality initiatives by participating in monitoring activities and process improvements.
• Perform initial and ongoing patient assessments to monitor status, improve quality, and enhance safety.
• Review and co-sign admission assessments for LPN staff and provide feedback to improve assessment quality.
• Utilize critical thinking to identify areas needing improvement and guide patient care staff accordingly.
• Document patient care activities and quality monitoring accurately to support compliance with quality measures.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, team members, patients, and families to enhance care outcomes and patient experience.
• Handle service recovery and follow-up on patient care concerns professionally.
• Delegate tasks appropriately while fostering teamwork and accountability.
• Adapt positively to healthcare dynamics and support organizational mission and values.
• Engage in continued education and provide professional feedback to staff to improve nursing practice.

Education

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required. A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing is preferred.

Work Experience

At least one year of registered nursing experience is preferred.

Certification/License

Current RN license in the state or compact licensure is required. Graduate nurses must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

This role requires considerable mental concentration and physical activity including lifting up to 35 lbs., frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional exposure to hostile persons. Exposure to communicable diseases via blood and other body fluids is common. Minimal physical discomfort is expected.
