General Summary

The Surgical Technologist is a skilled professional who assists before, during, and after surgery using sterile techniques and specialized equipment. This position focuses on supporting C-section deliveries and nursery care within the labor and delivery operating room.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with surgical procedures, particularly C-sections, in the labor and delivery suite.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and demonstrate manual dexterity.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring sterile conditions.
• Set up operating tables for deliveries and surgical procedures, restock rooms, and coordinate inventory with sterile processing.
• Employ proper aseptic and scrub techniques throughout surgical processes.
• Perform unit-related tasks such as answering phones, patient checks, nursing aide duties, and electronic charting.
• Clean and stock delivery rooms, nursery equipment, and related areas.
• Assist patients with daily living activities including meals, grooming, skin care, and toileting.
• Provide postpartum care such as applying K-Pads, ice packs, and binders.
• Collect specimens, take vital signs, and document intake and output.
• Communicate any changes in patient condition or behavior to appropriate personnel promptly.

Education

Graduation from an accredited program in Nursing, Practical Nursing, or Surgical Technology is required. Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with documented cross-training in scrub-tech duties is also acceptable.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Surgical Assistants should have at least three years of scrub experience.

Certification and Licenses

Completion of surgical scrub training and orientation in both operating room and obstetrics is required. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be obtained prior to completing orientation. Preference is given to candidates holding Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credentials.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role demands significant mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases is expected, along with occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Physical discomfort is minimal but present.
