General Summary

The Surgical Technologist is a skilled professional who assists before, during, and after surgeries, utilizing sterile techniques and specialized equipment to support surgical teams, particularly in Labor & Delivery settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with surgical procedures such as C-sections in the Labor & Delivery operating room.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and demonstrate manual dexterity.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring sterile setup of delivery and surgical tables.
• Restock and clean rooms post-procedure, coordinating inventory with Sterile Processing.
• Apply proper aseptic and sterile techniques, including surgical scrub procedures.
• Perform unit tasks such as answering phones, patient checks, nursing aide duties, and electronic charting.
• Maintain cleanliness and stock of C-section suites, OB/Nursery equipment, delivery rooms, cribs, and nursery areas.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living including meals, grooming, skin care, and toileting.
• Provide postpartum care such as application of K-Pads, ice packs, and binders.
• Collect specimens, take vital signs, and document intake and output.
• Communicate any changes in patient condition or behavior to appropriate personnel promptly.

Education

Graduation from an accredited Nursing, Practical Nurse, or Surgical Technologist program is required. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) candidates with documented cross-training as a scrub tech are also considered.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory. Surgical Assistants should have at least three years of scrub experience.

Certification and Licenses

Training in surgical scrub techniques and completion of scrub tech orientation in both OR and OB settings are required. American Heart Association BLS certification must be obtained prior to orientation completion. Preference is given to candidates with Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role demands significant mental focus and physical activity, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Expect frequent exposure to infectious and communicable diseases, as well as occasional interactions with hostile individuals. Physical discomfort is minimal but present.
