General Summary

The Registered Nurse serves as a primary caregiver in outpatient oncology infusion, preparing patients for chemotherapy appointments, conducting physical assessments, and educating patients and families on treatment procedures and expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for provider visits and chemotherapy by screening and collecting relevant health data.
• Assist healthcare providers during examinations and guide patients through laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
• Obtain necessary diagnostic labs prior to chemotherapy administration.
• Set up and maintain treatment rooms with appropriate supplies and instruments, ensuring cleanliness and safety.
• Provide counseling and education to patients and families regarding oncology care and treatment plans.
• Insert IV catheters and administer IV fluids for hydration and medication delivery.
• Review medical records to understand patient history relevant to chemotherapy and biotherapy.
• Administer chemotherapeutic agents under physician direction or established protocols, verifying dosages with a second nurse.
• Follow oncology protocols to maintain a safe environment and handle hazardous materials properly.
• Monitor patients during and after treatment, documenting observations and treatment details accurately.
• Support investigational drug protocols by ensuring patient understanding and proper documentation.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Graduation from an accredited nursing school is required.

Experience

Preferred: Minimum of 2 years oncology nursing experience, with at least 1 year in an outpatient setting.

Certification and Licenses

• Current RN license in a Compact state or the state of employment required.
• American Heart Association BLS certification required.
• Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This role requires considerable mental focus, the ability to lift up to 35 lbs, and frequent walking, standing, and other physical activities such as turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and potentially hostile individuals may occur. The nurse will work with sharps and biohazardous materials and must be able to function effectively under stress.
