This part-time role involves thorough review and precise coding of medical records to ensure accurate representation of diagnoses, treatments, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Accurately code all diagnoses, treatments, and procedures using established classification systems and guidelines.
• Review medical records to verify documentation supports principal diagnoses and comorbidities for DRG assignment.
• Collaborate with physicians and clinical documentation specialists to clarify and improve documentation quality.
• Apply coding edits and modifiers appropriately, coordinating with billing and revenue departments to ensure accurate claim submissions.
• Analyze clinical data to identify secondary diagnoses affecting patient severity indices.
• Prioritize retrospective coding tasks based on unbilled accounts and documentation needs.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding challenges or issues impacting coding accuracy and workflow.

Education and Credentials

• Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or equivalent education and experience.
• Required credentials include RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or equivalent certification.

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of coding experience, preferably within a hospital environment.
• At least 2 years of inpatient coding experience is preferred.
• Experience in acute care facilities, peer review organizations, quality assurance, or utilization review is advantageous.

Skills and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS).
• Proficient understanding of ICD-CM coding principles under the Prospective Payment System.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to interpret complex clinical information.
• High level of analytical thinking, planning, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a busy, sometimes noisy environment with frequent interruptions.

Physical Requirements

• Good near visual acuity and motor coordination to operate computer systems.
