Overview: Under the guidance of the Coding Director, the Advanced Certified Coding Specialist ensures precise coding of diagnoses and procedures across all medical record types, utilizing appropriate documentation. This role includes training new staff on policies, procedures, and coding workflows, particularly within EPIC systems. Serving as a key resource, the specialist clarifies coding guidelines and supports accurate code assignment. Additionally, this position assists with backlog management and contributes to achieving financial objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Train and orient new employees on coding duties, workflows, and software usage.
• Monitor and recommend updates to coding policies and procedures.
• Support coding activities both retrospectively and concurrently to maintain workflow efficiency.
• Conduct compliance reviews to ensure coding accuracy and data integrity.
• Provide constructive feedback to coding staff and collaborate with leadership on action plans to enhance accuracy and productivity.
• Manage assigned work queues in EPIC, ensuring timely coder support within 24 hours.
• Serve as a resource for ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding questions.
• Exemplify performance standards that promote patient satisfaction and service excellence.

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential required.
• Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management preferred.
• RHIA or RHIT credentials preferred.

Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding experience in a hospital environment.
• Preferred 3 years auditing or lead coder experience.

Skills and Abilities:

• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT-4 coding systems.
• Understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and specialties to ensure accurate coding.
• Effective staff training and continuing education coordination skills.
• Ability to work independently and solve problems efficiently.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with medical necessity guidelines and their impact on coding accuracy and reimbursement.

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting and computer use; requires good speech, sight, and hearing to perform independently.
